McDonald's Pulls AI-Created Holiday Commercial After Public Outcry.
McDonald's has pulled a holiday advertisement made with Artificial Intelligence after receiving widespread online backlash.
The 45-second spot was developed using AI video tools and was first published online for McDonald's Netherlands on 6 December.
Social Media Response and Decision to Pull
Shortly after its release, viewers on social media denounced the implementation of AI in the commercial. Several called it "uncanny" and "awkwardly stitched together".
"This moment serves as an key learning as we investigate the appropriate utilization of Artificial Intelligence," stated a spokesperson from the company.
The advert was produced for the brand by Netherlands-based company TBWA\Neboko and US firm The Sweetshop. It showed various scenarios that might go awry over the Christmas break, using the theme "not the most wonderful time of the year".
A Growing Movement of AI Commercials
Commercials that incorporate AI tools have emerged as a growing trend among large companies, notably for the Christmas season.
- Coca-Cola has recently released back-to-back AI-created Christmas commercials.
- Technical Challenges: As clips created with current AI video tools are more likely to become unstable the more extended they are, the majority of such clips tend to be only a few seconds in length.
- Industry Concerns: The video also sparked fears about automation in the creative sector, with some commenters stating it could reduce opportunities for production staff.
Defense from the Production Company
Following the commercial being pulled, a producer's head, Melanie Bridge, defended the project.
Bridge claimed, the development required "seven weeks" and involved generating "thousands of takes" which were then shaped in post-production "just as we would on any high-craft production".
"This was not an AI trick," she commented. "The result was a finished piece."
Mixed Audience Sentiment
While the McDonald's ad was largely criticized, the reception for some AI-assisted holiday ads has been varied.
For instance, a recent AI-created Christmas ad from Coca-Cola according to analysis received a significant "positive sentiment rating" from the public.
However, other businesses have likewise faced scrutiny for employing AI in their campaigns. Luxury brand Valentino, for example, was criticized for ads that some called "cheap" and "uncanny".
The situation highlights the evolving discussion within the marketing and creative sectors about the trade-off between new tools and audience reception.
