Patients Stopping Weight-Loss Jabs Gain Back Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

New research indicates that people who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain lost weight much more quickly than those who halt traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Research printed in a prominent health publication points out that while obese individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Users purchasing these drugs need to be informed of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain implies a reversion to starting weight within about one and a half years.

Weighing Therapies

The research, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

The team note that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically experience a less rapid creep back—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

The Reason for the Quick Regain

Nutrition scientists propose the mechanism of the injections explains the heightened regain.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls appetite.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Issue?

Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians say that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy should be considered life-long.

This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "underscore the chronic character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Experiences

Individuals who have stopped the jabs explain a powerful resurgence of hunger.

"It felt as if a trigger activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled one woman.

This challenge is worsened if individuals have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Growing Adoption

Recent estimates indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.

  • Adoption is higher among females compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, experts emphasize that while these medications are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing behavioural management.
