The former Brazilian president arrested after being deemed a risk of fleeing

Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities determined he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under house arrest.

The one-time leader was convicted of orchestrating a military coup in last fall and given more than over two decades in prison, but he was staying under home detention pending appeals.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after fresh information emerged.

This involved trying to remove his electronic bracelet and a call for a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a potential flight.

Legal Document Reveals Flight Fears

In a document approving the custody, Justice Moraes said information from the unit overseeing the former president's confinement suggested the former leader's aim to disable the surveillance device to guarantee victory in his escape.

This, it said, would be assisted by the disorder caused by the demonstration called by his offspring.

His child, Flávio, who works as a legislator, called for a assembly of his followers near his father's house to take place on Saturday evening.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on digital networks on the previous day: Do you plan to struggle for your country, or observe everything from your phone there on your couch? I call on you to fight with us."

He said the gathering would be so followers could "pray for his physical condition and for the restoration of democratic rule in our country."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of Justice Moraes's decision was the chance of the former president's move to embassies near the home, considering that the inquiries revealed a history of planning to request asylum through a consular facility", a declaration said.

The court filing underscores that the American diplomatic mission in the national capital, Brazil's capital, is located around approximately 13 kilometers from the former president's residence.

Global Responses

The former president's legal troubles have provoked anger from fellow populist conservative US President Trump, prompting him to enact a 50% tariff on goods coming from Brazil.

He is being kept in a federal law enforcement building in the capital and will undergo a imprisonment assessment on the following day.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the High Court to permit him to serve his whole jail sentence under home confinement, with tracking devices.

They also asked that Bolsonaro be allowed to depart his residence for medical treatment, saying he required regular treatment for respiratory ailments and other health problems.

Details of Guilty Verdict

He was convicted of leading a plot aimed at retaining his authority after he was defeated in the 2022 election to his political opponent, Lula.

High Court judges said that he had knowledge of a plot which encompassed plans to murder his opponent and his running partner, Geraldo Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Alexandre de Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been overseeing his judicial proceedings.

The scheme was prevented because it couldn't obtain the support of the military leaders. The current president was inaugurated without problem on the first day of 2023.

But a following week, on January 8th, many his backers invaded and destroyed government buildings in the capital, the capital city.

The police took action and around approximately 1,500 persons were arrested.

The judges found that the rioters had been provoked by Bolsonaro whose strategy, they said, was for the national armed forces to intervene, reestablish control and bring him back to power.

At the time, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the 27 years and three months sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also banned from running for public office until twenty-sixty - a decade minus two years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The one-time head of state called the legal proceedings a political persecution and said it was aimed at blocking him running in the 2026 presidential election.
