Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay Technology in 2025.
Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in implementing video review technology.
Video review technology will make its debut at The Championships for the 2025 edition.
Competitors are granted the option to question certain decisions made by the official, mirroring the system already in place at both the US Open and the Aussie major.
This innovation is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.
This step comes just a season following the AELTC introduced ELC, which terminated the 147-year role of line judges.
Scope of Challenges
Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to review specific decisions, such as:
- If a ball has double-bounced.
- Whether a ball made contact with an rival's racket or person during play.
- Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a point.
Notably, there will be no cap on the amount of reviews a player can request.
A Recent Example
An illustrative incident took place in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against his opponent.
Draper admitted it was a tough call for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."
The umpire watched a replay and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, awarding the point to Medvedev.
Wider Implementation
This technology are not new for Grand Slams. It has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at all of its events.
Other Changes
Another change at The Championships this year will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This solves situations where the crowd have sometimes been unsure if a shot was in or out.
Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
